Republicans, in their self-serving and never-ending quest to oppose any policy Obama proposes, are completely missing the point. Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader, said yesterday, “President Obama should not exploit this crisis to impose a job-killing national energy tax on struggling families and small businesses.” First, it is an established fact that investments in clean energycreate high-quality jobs, and any energy taxes could easily be used for these investments. Further, a strong clean energy industry would help end the American economic doldrums and lead growth for decades. Energy costs will actually be lower in the long-run if we transition away from finite fossil fuels today. It's truly a win-win for all Americans including struggling families and small businesses to tax fossil fuels and use those proceeds to invest in clean energy and energy subsidies for those who need them. The only way to lose? By continuing to invest in fossil fuels, which destroy jobs and cause inestimable billions of dollars of economic damage.
